QR Code Guide

PNG vs SVG for QR Codes

Use the right export format depending on channel, print method, and required clarity.

TL;DR

  • Use PNG for quick digital sharing and small prints (≤600px).
  • Use SVG for anything you might scale (posters, signage, packaging).
  • Keep quiet zones intact and error correction at least M for print.
  • Preview on both dark and light backgrounds before exporting.

PNG vs SVG fundamentals

PNG

Best for rapid sharing, chat apps, and on-screen previews. Fixed resolution—export at 600–1200px for prints and keep background solid.

SVG

Resolution-independent vector. Ideal for posters, vinyl, and laser engraving. Friendly for brand teams using Adobe/Canva/PowerPoint.

Printing checklist

  • For PNG prints: export ≥900px and 300 DPI, then convert to CMYK if required by your printer.
  • For SVG: outline text elements, lock quiet zone to 4 modules, and request vector-safe laminates.
  • Always test scan on iOS + Android after final print proof.

Common mistakes

  • Stretching PNGs beyond their original size → modules blur, scanners fail.
  • Inverting colors without ensuring sufficient contrast (4.5:1 minimum).
  • Placing logos inside the Finder patterns or quiet zone.
